about me

When I was a kid, my parents would never miss any episode of the TV series "The Persuaders!" - the adventures of two guys, played by Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. One of the episodes has a numismatic theme: its title was "The Gold Napoleon".

At one point, Brett and Danny argue over who should pay for lunch and Brett tosses a coin to decide, Danny recognizes the face on the coin the guy with the goaty beard or in other words a Gold Napoleon. The plot gets complicated from this point, and I can't recall if the coins were fake or genuine, I just remember how Danny (Tony Curtis) punches one of the bad guys in the face with his fist full of gold coins...

We can easily identify the coin from the "the guy with goaty beard" Danny is referring to: it must be Napoleon the 3rd. Here is an image of a gold 20 francs from 1867, bearing the mintmark 'A' (Paris):

This coin was .900 gold weighted 6.4516 grams, with gold content of 0.1867 oz
